Now here is one you don't see every day; in fact it may be the only Mothers of Invention poster to exist for their six month performance beginning in early 1967 at the Garrick Theater, a small club above the Café A-Go Go in New York City. An oversized cardboard poster featuring art from their newly released album Absolutely Free, the poster most likely was used in the lobby or show window.
Frank Zappa has been hailed with critical acclaim as one of the most innovative, highly productive and prolific artists of rock and roll. What made the Mothers especially unique was their blend of jazz, rock, classical, R&B, doo-wop and just plain freaky music behavior. The band originally became popular in the underground LA scene in 1966 and in late 1966 the Band relocated to New York to record their Absolutely Free album. It was debuted at the Garrick Theater and there they became the house band for the next six months!
Their performances were always unique each night with the Band promoting audience participation. It was said that some nights there were more of the audience on stage than the Band. And how about that advertising next to the art? I don't know of any other group that was advertising that type of equipment!
For those who love Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, this has to be the ultimate cool concert poster and a very important one in their development!
If you haven't listened to the Mothers, definitely put it on your "to do" list, for they are one of the best bands of the counterculture 60's generation. More than deserving, Frank Zappa was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
